Shoulder watches your screen against a goal you set, pulls out what matters, and lets you ask about it afterward — from an on-device knowledge base built just for that project. This guide walks through install, your first recording, and your first question.

Install & permissions

  1. Install Shoulder from TestFlight using the invite link you were sent. Shoulder is currently pre-release.
  2. Open the app. Shoulder will ask for Microphone and Camera permission — these are used to capture and preview your screen recording, not to listen or watch you separately.
  3. Grant Screen Recording permission when prompted. This is what lets Shoulder capture your screen at low bandwidth while you work.

Note: Shoulder never logs into anything on your behalf. It watches what’s on screen and remembers it — you stay the one clicking, typing, and signing in.

Create your first project

  1. Tap the + button on the project list.
  2. Give the project a name and a goal — for example, “Track what I spend on the kids’ school supplies” or “Remember how I file expense reports.” The goal is what Shoulder extracts against.
  3. Tap Create. You’ll land on the project’s thread, which is where recordings and chat both live.

Start your first recording

  1. From the project thread, press the record button.
  2. Do the thing you’d normally do — fill out the form, click through the portal, pay the bill. Shoulder is recording your screen at low bandwidth in the background.
  3. Press stop when you’re done. Shoulder uploads the recording for extraction against your stated goal, then discards the raw video from the cloud once extraction finishes.

Only the extraction step touches the cloud. Everything after — project storage, search, and chat — runs on your device. See Privacy & Your Data for the full picture.

Ask Shoulder about it

Open the project thread and type a question — “Where do I go to pay this again?” or “What was the total?” Shoulder answers from what it extracted, with a reference back to the recording it came from.
